Now that you have someone on your web site, they have signed up for your newsletter or they have bought your product. Now what? Do they sit and wonder "did it go though." If you have an auto responder, then a message that is already written will be sent out to them. It might say something as simple as " Thank you for subscribing" or "Thank you for your order".
If they sent an email, you can have a response saying "We will get back to you within 24 hours". That gives you some time to look at your emails and get back to them with the answer
They want the personal touch. If they can not get in touch with someone when they have problems, they get upset. That means bad word of mouth advertising and that spreads very fast. Sometimes faster then good word of mouth advertising.
Using follow - up email is just good business.

I agree 100% with your blog here about follow up. They say, the fortune is in the follow up. And getting personal with them is brilliant. We are people, not numbers. So anytime you send follow up mail, ask yourself this question. Would I want to receive this letter? It will do wonders for your follow up skills.
Sincerely,
Craig Garcia
I bought an iPhone specifically to do "instant" follow-up. When I get an email saying someone has signed in, I try to call them immediately while they are still on the web site.
I introduce myself, offer to answer questions, and point out some key information. Most of the time, the prospects are immediately impressed that I have technology that allowed me to get to them while they are still on the website.
Demonstrating expertise is much more powerful than promising it.
Getting back to your prospective customers quickly is of top priority.
The money is in the follow up with the personal touch.
Let your customers know that you truly care about them and appreciate their business.
